A handful of workers escaped serious injury when a Mississauga house that was under construction suddenly collapsed Wednesday morning.

Three workers were in the basement of the home when they saw and heard cracks forming in a wall, and they ran outside moments before the house collapsed.

Peel Regional Police are investigating the cause of the collapse, which occurred on Cawthra Road near Hyacinthe Boulevard shortly before 8:30 a.m.

At this point, police don't know what caused the house to fall, but it's believed one of the walls gave way first, causing the rest of the structure to come tumbling down.

No injuries were reported.

Enbridge officials were called to the scene to repair the broken gas line. As a precaution, a few homes in the immediate area have been evacuated until the gas leak is capped.

The two-storey house was built in the 1940s and was being used as a business location for Olympia Windows and Doors. Work crews were building a wheelchair ramp, a top-floor apartment, an addition and underpinning as part of the renovation project.
